In 1978 I put money down on a house in Pilar and moved my "pottery business" to the village. After setting up my studio and living space in the 1100 square foot house I went into Taos to get the telephone hooked up. Simple, you just go in and tell them your address and it's done. Not in Taos in 1978. I was told that there were no more phone lines. All 24 phones were on three eight party lines and none were available. Quit a shock for an aspiring artist business man. So I would go to my neighbor Mrs. Quintana's house and use her phone, sometimes the cafe was open and I could go there, or drive six miles to a pay phone, but it was always vandalized. Mrs. Quintana lived with her daughter who was a nun who ran a bank in Taos. Anyway, back to the telephone, it took three years before I could get a phone, but it was a private line at least.
